Hindi Indie Songs July - August 2023

Khoya Khoya - Anumita Nadesan

Composed & Performed by: Anumita Nadesan

Lyrics: Paras Thakur, Raghav Kaushik, Anumita Nadesan

Produced by: Aman Moroney, Paras Thakur

Released by: Big Bang Records

My introduction to Anumita's music was through "Khwaab," a song that sweeps over you like a refreshing, cool breeze. She does the same way she did when she begins with "Mera kwahishon ka shamiyana..."

The song kicks off with an intriguing arpeggio that piques our curiosity. The acoustic guitar adds a cozy ambiance.

Anumita's performance flows like a babbling stream, soothing and calming. Lines like "Pairon tale, Leheron sa..." are just a taste of the many playful moments. With unexpected turns, both the melody and story of the song keep us on our toes. The backing vocal arrangement, placement, and execution enhance the song remarkably. They contribute significant depth to the composition.

Drums and Strings join in the second verse and I loved the cello phrases. The lyrics, while simple, carry a charm that consistently brings smiles. Especially, the pre-chorus's closure with "Kehna Kya zaroori, Chehre pe sab likha"

A brilliant composition executed in a way, to make your day.

Raahein - Parvatish Pradeep, Shristi & Sushant Sudhakaran

Composed by Parvatish Pradeep

Performed by: Shrishti & Parvatish Pradeep

Lyrics: Sushant Sudhakaran

Genre: Pop

What caught my attention first in the song is the clever use of distortion and saturation across multiple layers. This technique adds a distinct color and character to the song.

The song's writer is Sushant Sudhakaran, and Shristi's lead vocals are truly captivating, growing even more enchanting as the song unfolds. Her voice takes on a chilled vibe during the chorus line "Rahein Haan ye Nayi hai."

I particularly enjoyed how the interlude section transitions between different instruments, featuring an Overdrive/Wah Wah guitar and synths. The bass line during this part stands out for its simplicity yet tight rhythm.

There's a captivating pause as Parvatish initiates a fresh verse, leading into a hidden gem – a powerful chorus sung in unison by Parvatish and Shristi. The bridge section is densely packed with lyrics and delivers a grand impact.

The song's engineering is exceptional, steering clear of flashy sound traps. The compressed drums carry a retro Gated drum vibe, blending perfectly within the song's sound. It is a fantastic effort by the team, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Baat Kya Hai - Samira Koppikar

Composed & Performed by: Samira Koppikar

Lyrics: Shellee

Genre: Indie Pop / Bossa Nova

The song ingeniously blends various styles together. Samira Koppikar has composed the song and the song has been written by Shelle.

The song takes an unexpected turn with a Bossa Nova chorus. Shelle's lyrics are refreshing and sweet, like a comforting hug when least expected. The addition of a beautiful clarinet solo, along with layered clarinet sounds over the verses, adds a unique beauty. The final chorus, where "baat kya" is sung over "ooo oo aai yehh," is particularly enchanting. And the outro provides a delightful spin, leaving a lasting impression. The song intermittently incorporates Indian classical and Bossa nova nuances, which keep us engaged and curious.

Samira Koppikar's performance feels remarkably whole, with a surprising distinction between her timbre in lead vocals and the backing vocals.

The production and arrangement have a natural, uncomplicated vibe. It begins with straightforward EP chords and pads under the vocals. Even when the beats come in, the song still sounds light as air. Despite its simplicity, the mixing and mastering are expertly done, making the song shine and giving it a grand feel.

Tu Chodiyon Na - Ronit Vinta

Composed, Written, and Performed by: Ronit Vinta

Genre: Pop / LoFi

Although not a recent release, I stumbled upon this captivating song on YouTube recently, and it has instantly won my heart. The song commences with a girl talking to her friend about a facet of herself, a secret her boyfriend remains unaware of. That is sweet and is a very interesting intro to the song. Then, with an unexpected twist, we encounter surprise #2—a shift into a pitched-down, lo-fi segment. A drop that's utterly satisfying. The song's ability to seamlessly blend different elements and surprise the listener adds to its allure.

The music video for the song takes a minimalist approach, capturing a single slow-motion scene of a man deeply in love, seated on the beach, reaching out to touch the crashing waves. This visual perfectly complements the song's emotional essence.

Within the song, the bridge is adorned with the harmonies of Ronit's voice and atmospheric pads. In a fleeting moment, it evokes echoes of "Tera Hone Laga Hoon,". The song is a treasure trove of surprises, each one unfolding one after the other.

I see that the song just gets better when I listen to it, during the serene hours of the night. The song has been released by Big Bang Records / Sony Music.

Zindagi Kya Hai Tu - Joell

Composed, Performed by: Joell

Lyrics: Chinmayi Tripathi

Genre: Pop/Blues

The intro of the song makes me feel as if I have all the Peace in the world, and evokes a sense of tranquility, though I am far away from those things, in any direction. This is one of those few songs, that makes me relive favorite moments in the past. The song begins with a modest guitar I - IV arpeggios, hiding all its beauty we are about to hear, and throws the lines "Zindagi, Kya hai tu" and a few lovely jazzy piano notes that remind me of how I felt when I listened to "Phir Dhekhiye". Hold on, I haven't even stopped talking about the first line yet!

Transitioning into the solo portion, a soulful Blues guitar claims the spotlight. Between 1:36 and 1:52, the music leads my mind through joyful moments in time. Delicate chords and subtle accidentals weave a tapestry of emotions and experiences.

Joell's performance shines with a brilliantly subtle touch, particularly standing out in the bridge section. His mastery is evident as he crafts a delicate arrangement, featuring an ensemble of guitars, piano, trumpet, trombones, and organ. The infusion of warmth these instruments bring adds great value to both the song and its theme. This composition truly deserves more recognition and discussion—it's an essential gem in the music landscape.

Mera Dil Pahadon me - Shrey, Aikarth Purohit

Composed & Performed by: Shrey & Aikarth

Lyrics: Shrey

Genre: Acoustic / Country

Mera Dil Pahadon Me by Shrey & Aikarth might not be new, but I stumbled upon it recently and it's been playing on repeat. The song beautifully expresses a love for hills and mountains, capturing the essence of the terrain. It's a prime example of how a simple yet excellent song can create something great through its straightforward lyrics, melody, minimal arrangement, and skillful performance.

Shrey has taken charge of writing, composing, and performing the song. His performance seems modest, but it's evident that he's a seasoned classical singer. His voice maintains a consistent volume, sounding clear and powerful regardless of the high or low notes he's singing. Quite impressive.

Exploring Shrey's other songs now, I'm certain there will be more to share next time.

Aao Zara - Garvit Soni, Priyansh Srivastava

Composed, Written, and performed by: Garvit Soni, Priyansh Srivastava

Genre: Indie Pop

This song is a different one in this lot. Aao Zara has been composed and performed by the duo Garvit Soni and Priyansh Srivastava.

Absolutely, the song's beginning with almost dry - vocals and electric piano sets a uniquely intimate tone. As the song progresses, the introduction of reverb adds a layer of depth that gradually unfolds, creating a wonderful sonic experience. The production truly shines in its brilliance.

If I am not wrong, except for the vocal tracks, all the layers in the song have been meticulously programmed. This programming has been executed skillfully, resulting in layers that exude a rich and lush sound. The programming and arrangement have been meticulously executed, resulting in layers that seamlessly intertwine, creating a lush and harmonious sound. The careful arrangement contributes to the song's rich texture and resonant quality.

The addition of synth layers is a stroke of genius. Their subtle presence adds a delicate yet impactful touch, infusing the song with a modern and new-age vibe. These layers inject a burst of color into the composition, enhancing its overall aesthetic and appeal.

I'm eager to delve into more tracks from this duo!
