Tamil Indie Songs July - August

Kaikku Ettinadhu - Vijai Narain

This song is like a gust of cold wind, fresh air that one hasn't felt in a long time. Vijai Narain as usual effortlessly nails with his voice as he did in Suzhali. Thanks to Vijay Narain for focusing on Indie briefly. It is a mix of Country, folk, classical music, and philosophy. This song has been written by Super Subbu, the lyrics happily travel with the breezy melody and hopping rhythm.

The line " Ambala butthi kalimannu, pathoda pathinonnu" is an earworm. The song has an interesting fantasy plot of a heist done by robbers from Future in a period bank. It is an essential, and it definitely going to stay for a very long time in your playlists. It has a colorful arrangement having Acoustic guitars ( by Keba Jeremiah ), and interestingly Fiddle by Bruce Hoffman.

The best part: Fresh country sound, dark humor in a song, Vijay Narain's riveting performance

Nee Nigazhndhaai - Umashankar Kannaiyan

What's really cool about Umashankar's songs is how the song titles aren't just lines from the lyrics. They're like short sentences that tell a whole story about the song. "Nee Nigazhndhaai" is this chill, beachy Bossa Nova song that feels like it's from some retro beach around the world. You've got this lively mix of sounds - a busy guitar, an accordion, and those congas that used to be big back in the day.

Umashankar and Raj Gajendran wrote the lyrics, and the line "Indreno Kadal kaatril Eraalamaai nee, Kadar kadhalan kannil Yezham alai nee," is a brilliant use of wordplay, and metaphor. I've got more to say about this song, but for now, just know that it's a must-have in your playlist. It's got a vibe that takes you on a journey, and you'll definitely want it around.

The best part: The narrative, lyrics that tells a story, the unapologetic choice of genre, arrangement, and performance

Vaan - Keethan, Jimmy Francis John, Shravan Sridhar

"Vaan" is a gorgeous love song, in which he calls his love to take different forms of nature together and disappear into nature. I could really feel the lyrics through the arrangement which is one of the biggest strengths of this song. All the layers are heard, but there is no definite shape /form for those layers, very abstract.

The song has been beautifully composed by Keethan, and performed by Jimmy Franis John and Shravan sridhar. I felt like someone appeared in my window, and convinced me to get out and fly all over the sky. The song is also in Hindi as Yaare, sung by Shravan Sridhar. I will write more about this song.

The best part: The theme, abstract arrangement, and beautiful performance by singers and instrumentalists

Nilla Mazhaiye - Vidusan Kaneswaran, Dharrini Santhabavan

"Nilla Mazhaiye" is like a soothing hug of music, making me think of Anirudh. The singing and flute are like magic, and the music changes from one feeling to another, like a rollercoaster. The boy's part sounds modern and fun, while the girl's part feels old-school and pretty. It's like mixing new and old flavors together. Overall, the song feels warm and cozy, taking me on a happy ride of melodies.

Vidusan and Dharrini have done a great job with their vocal performances, but Dharrini's performance is definitely a head-turner.

The best part: Vocal performances and the production quality is amazing

Nam Ooru Pen - Ashwin Vinayagamoorthy, Karthik

"Nam ooru Pen" is a lively pop song by Ashwin Vinayagamoorthy, brought to life beautifully by the beloved Karthik's vocals. Kabilan's lyrics hold a strong impact, especially when sung by Karthik.

The arrangement is refreshingly straightforward, keeping your toes tapping. Additional vocals by Sudharshan Ashok, Kausthub Ravi, and the notable Indie artist Kevin Fernando add depth. The song initially seems focused on rural women, though it later broadens its perspective in the music video – a pleasant surprise. In a realm dominated by love songs, it's refreshing to encounter a track centered on this theme.

The best part: The theme of the song, Production, Karthik's performance + Backing vocals

Impossible Possible - Arun VT

"Impossible Possible" is a rap and hip-hop fusion by Arun VT and ChandraMouli that exudes a grand and theatrical vibe through its distinct arrangement. Seamlessly blending rap, Carnatic classical, hip-hop, Tamil, and English elements, it feels like a medley of multiple songs. The lyrics, authored and delivered by Arun VT and ChandraMouli, pack a punch.

The song's sonic landscape is striking, particularly at the outset, creating a massive presence. The unexpected inclusion of the nadaswaram instrument adds a touch of awe and commands the spotlight for a significant portion of the track. This creative choice deserves applause. "Impossible Possible" makes for an excellent driving or workout soundtrack, with its captivating sound.

The best part: Sound, production quality, theme, and surprising choice of instruments.

Rottaram Pakkaiyila - Martin Kartenjer

I'm revisiting this song for the second time, another version of Martin Kartenjer's "Madhi Kuzhambida". It's a refreshing love track, where a girl serenades her boyfriend. "Madhi Kuzhambida" represents that magical moment when her longtime crush converses with her, rekindling her love each time. One of the standout lines, "Kathaadi vayasukku nee Vagidedutha" adds a touch of playfulness and nostalgia, instantly conjuring a smile with its relatable sweetness. Martin's voice remains vibrant, seemingly growing younger with each song. As the song unfolds, its melodies intertwine seamlessly with Martin's expressive rendition, evoking a sense of shared experience. The combination of heartfelt lyrics, the captivating narrative, and Martin's emotive vocals makes this version of "Madhi Kuzhambida" a sweet experience. I miss Swasthika Swaminathan's presence in this version.

The best part: Lyrics, fresh voice and Martin's performance

Please listen to these songs, and other artists in these playlists, and Follow.
